STOCK MARKET RATING (THE BIG PICTURE) … 5.0 (1 - 4 is bearish, 5 is neutral, 6 - 9 is bullish). The market is down from the inauguration day and the November election. The DJIA is down <7.9%>, the S&P-500 <9.0%>, and the NASDAQ-100 <12.3%>.
In the past, when the market has fallen this far, this fast, historically, it has been wrong. The retail investor is now scared. Broker calls are increasing, asking “Should we sell now?”
As prices decline, more stocks show favorable “buy” characteristics in my rating system. However, with economic conditions in flux, this is not a time for new purchases in my view. Significant worries abound, and daily market action is jumpy and schizophrenic. The list of items includes tariffs, economic growth, inflation rates, interest rates, earnings, jobs, congressional issues, and court cases head the list.
Tariff wars are elevated, and the market does not like it. A “10% correction” is upon us, and it happened so quickly. Much of the damage has already been done. The headlines focus on our neighbors, Mexico and Canada. China is relatively quiet.
The interplay between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches - the administration has won and lost battles – creates even more investor uncertainty. When will we come together as a nation, and rise above the rest? Common sense – not doing illegal or fraudulent things, not spending money we don’t have – must rule our conduct.
A justification for John Maynard Keynes' beliefs, “The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money” was that “by government deficit spending, we owe the debt to ourselves” --- well, that is not really accurate, is it? We owe plenty to China. Furthermore, we do not create economic periods where the US pays off government debt. We must come together to fix these problems.
